How to Use the Unit Converter
Select a category from the tabs at the top of the converter, such as Length, Weight, Temperature, Speed, Volume, Area, Data, or Time. Enter a numeric value in the input field and choose the unit you are converting from using the dropdown menu on the left. Then select the unit you want to convert to using the dropdown on the right. The result updates instantly as you type, so there is no need to click a button. Use the swap button between the two dropdowns to quickly reverse the conversion direction.
How Unit Conversion Works
Most unit conversions use a base-unit factor approach. Each unit in a category is defined by a conversion factor relative to one base unit. For example, in the Length category the base unit is the meter. A kilometer has a factor of 1000 (one kilometer equals 1000 meters) while an inch has a factor of 0.0254. To convert from one unit to another, the calculator multiplies the input value by the ratio of the source unit factor to the target unit factor.
Temperature conversions are the exception because they involve offsets rather than simple ratios. Converting Celsius to Fahrenheit requires multiplying by nine-fifths and then adding 32. Converting Celsius to Kelvin requires adding 273.15. The converter handles these formulas automatically so you always get an accurate result.
Supported Unit Categories
The converter covers eight categories that span everyday and technical use cases. The Length category includes metric units from millimeters to kilometers, imperial units from inches to miles, and nautical miles used in maritime and aviation contexts. The Weight category supports kilograms, grams, milligrams, pounds, ounces, stones, and both metric and US tons. Speed covers kilometers per hour, meters per second, miles per hour, knots, and feet per second. Volume handles liters, milliliters, US gallons, quarts, pints, cups, fluid ounces, tablespoons, and teaspoons.
The Area category converts between square kilometers, square meters, square centimeters, hectares, acres, square miles, square feet, and square inches. The Data category supports bits, bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes, petabytes, and their bit-based counterparts. Finally, the Time category covers milliseconds through years, using standard durations of 30 days per month and 365 days per year.
Quick Reference Table
Below the main conversion result you will find a quick reference table. This table shows the entered value converted into every unit in the current category at once. It is a convenient way to compare multiple conversions without changing the dropdown selections. The table updates in real time as you modify the input value.
Tips for Accurate Conversions
- Double-check whether you need US or imperial units. US gallons, pints, and fluid ounces differ from their imperial (UK) counterparts. This converter uses US customary units for volume.
- Data storage units in this converter use binary prefixes where one kilobyte equals 1024 bytes. Some contexts use decimal prefixes where one kilobyte equals 1000 bytes.
- For temperature, remember that the scales have different zero points. Zero degrees Celsius is 32 degrees Fahrenheit and 273.15 Kelvin.
- Month and year durations in the Time category are approximations using 30-day months and 365-day years. Actual calendar durations vary.
